Definition, effect & use in skin care
Stem cells are the basis of all regeneration – they renew tissue, control cellular processes, and play a central role in modern cosmetics and anti-aging research . But what exactly are stem cells, how do they work, and how can they be used in skin care?
What are stem cells?
Stem cells are so-called "primordial cells" from which specialized cells develop. They can divide indefinitely and transform into other cell types (e.g., skin, muscle, or nerve cells).
A distinction is made between:
-
Embryonic stem cells – pluripotent, can differentiate into almost all cell types
-
Adult stem cells – multipotent, e.g., in bone marrow or skin
-
Plant-based stem cells – used cosmetically for skin regeneration
Plant-based stem cells in cosmetics
In skin care, no living human stem cells are used, but rather extracts from plant stem cells (e.g., apple, edelweiss, grape). These are rich in:
-
Antioxidants
-
Amino acids
-
plant growth factors
They stimulate cell renewal , promote skin regeneration and can reduce signs of skin aging .
Exosomes & Cell Communication
Modern skin care goes even further:
Exosomes – tiny biological transporters – play a crucial role in cell communication. Combined with plant stem cells, they enable precise and deep-acting care at the cellular level .
